FoodSensing4CE

FoodSensing4CE (Smart Sensing Packaging for Sustainable Food Supply Chain) is an ambitious project dedicated to revolutionizing food quality monitoring and supply chain management in the agrifood sector through the scale-up of the FoodSensing smart packaging solution. The core mission is to significantly reduce food waste and improve supply chain efficiency by enabling continuous, non-invasive monitoring of food quality indicators throughout the entire packaged food journey—from production to retail.

At the heart of the project is the integration of ColorSensing’s advanced AI-based colour analysis technology into industrial Visual Inspection Machines (VIMs). This technology leverages sophisticated algorithms to analyze colour changes in smart packaging, which correspond to various food safety and freshness indicators. By embedding this system into operational packaging lines, FoodSensing4CE enables real-time, automated inspection of food products without opening or damaging the packaging. This continuous monitoring approach not only ensures food safety compliance but also provides actionable data for supply chain stakeholders, enhancing transparency and traceability.

The FoodSensing4CE project is focused on delivering a fully integrated and operational inspection system designed for real-world food packaging environments. Its primary goal is to reduce food waste by accurately detecting products at risk of spoilage, thereby minimizing premature disposal and unnecessary recalls. To achieve this, the project will integrate advanced AI-driven FoodSensing technology into an industrial-grade Visual Inspection Machine (VIM), ensuring suitability for high-throughput operational lines. The system’s effectiveness will be demonstrated in actual packaging environments, with success measured by key performance indicators such as inspection accuracy, efficiency gains, reductions in food waste, increased profits for retailers and producers, and the extent of industry adoption following pilot testing.

Among its specific objectives, FoodSensing4CE aims to deliver an integrated food quality inspection system that demonstrably reduces food waste during operational processing. It will also enhance supply chain transparency by enabling continuous and non-invasive monitoring at any stage of the supply and retail chain. The project is committed to improving food safety compliance and minimizing costly product recalls, while also scaling up the use of smart QR-based food quality indicators to encourage broader industrial adoption.

The central result of the project will be a validated, fully operational smart inspection system capable of non-invasively monitoring food safety indicators at an industrial scale. This system will be ready for deployment at any point in the packaged food retail chain, offering significant improvements in transparency, food safety, and sustainability.

Anticipated impacts include heightened transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain, improved food safety and compliance with industry standards, and a substantial reduction in food waste by preventing the premature disposal of consumable products. Retailers and producers are expected to benefit from increased profitability due to fewer returns, less discarded food, improved quality control, and optimized stock management. Ultimately, FoodSensing4CE will promote responsible and sustainable consumption and production practices within the agrifood sector.

FoodSensing4CE thus stands as a transformative step towards a smarter, more sustainable, and efficient food supply chain.
