The Ferti-ByProBIO project is an innovative initiative led by Groupe Ethicae, focused on transforming a previously underutilized by-product from biostimulant extraction into a renewable, circular organic fertilizer. Traditionally, the water extract by-products generated during the production of Groupe Ethicae’s biostimulant products have not been used in fertilizer processes due to their high moisture content, which compromised the quality of fertilizer pellets. Recognizing the potential of these nutrient-rich by-products, the project aims to convert them into valuable resources for farmers, aligning with the principles of circular economy and sustainable agriculture.
Ferti-ByProBIO is focused on transforming organic by-products into high-quality fertilizers through a carefully structured process. At the heart of the project is the selection and blending of moist by-products with locally sourced dry organic materials. This step is essential for achieving the optimal balance of moisture and nutrients, which is necessary for successful granulation and the formation of durable fertilizer pellets.
Once the right blend is established, the project emphasizes thorough nutrient analysis of the various formulations. This ensures that the final fertilizer product not only meets but exceeds quality standards required for organic agriculture. By combining precise ingredient selection with rigorous nutrient evaluation, Ferti-ByProBIO aims to deliver organic fertilizers that support sustainable farming practices and soil health.
Groupe Ethicae brings extensive expertise to the project, with a proven track record in producing a wide range of organic fertilizers from diverse raw materials—over 80 types are currently processed at their facility. The company’s strength lies in its mastery of raw material management, supported by a dedicated laboratory for in-depth material analysis. Previous innovations at Groupe Ethicae have demonstrated the feasibility of integrating new moist materials into their production process, paving the way for this project’s focus on local resource utilization.
The project’s next phase involves selecting the most promising local dry materials in the Occitanie region to mix with the moist by-product from the biostimulant extraction process. This approach not only valorizes waste but also supports local supply chains and reduces environmental impact by minimizing transportation and external inputs.
A key milestone for Ferti-ByProBIO is achieving Technology Readiness Level 9 (TRL 9), signifying a fully market-ready product. This is a realistic target, given Groupe Ethicae’s established processes and infrastructure for mixing and pelletizing various organic materials. The new fertilizer formula will undergo rigorous field trials in Occitanie and Catalonia, targeting major regional crops such as grape, wheat, and tree species. These trials, conducted with the support of specialized agronomic trialists, will demonstrate the nutritional impact and effectiveness of the new fertilizer in real agricultural settings.
In parallel, the company AkiNaO will conduct advanced analyses to assess the impact of the new fertilizer on both plants and soil, using a metabolomic approach. This research will provide valuable insights into the broader agronomic and environmental benefits of the product.
At the conclusion of the project, Groupe Ethicae (France) and Majusti Iberica (Spain) will launch an innovative, fully circular organic fertilizer, ready for commercialization. This product will offer farmers a sustainable, high-quality alternative that recycles industrial by-products, enhances soil health, and supports resilient crop production. The Ferti-ByProBIO project thus exemplifies the integration of waste valorization, local resource optimization, and circular economy principles in modern agriculture, setting a benchmark for future innovation in the sector.
