Industrial water treatment and recycling

The right to water is endangered: 38% of the EU population was affected by water scarcity in 2019, according to the European Commission (29% of the EU territory). This translates into a €2 to €9 billion cost of droughts per year.

The sustainable reuse of water in Europe has become a priority in the face of the growing challenges posed by climate change and the scarcity of water resources. In line with the European Green Deal and the principles of the Circular Economy, reusing treated water from urban areas and industrial or agricultural industries can help ensure a safe and predictable source of water in order to maintain human activities as well as preserve freshwater resources for our future generations.

Strict regulations, such as the EU Regulation on the reuse of wastewater adopted in 2020, provide a framework for these practices to ensure health and environmental safety. At the same time, investment in water treatment technologies and public awareness play a key role in encouraging the adoption of these sustainable practices, thereby contributing to more resilient management of the continent’s water resources.

Many EU countries have included in their ecological transition plans a redefinition of water management policies so as to approach a resilient, concerted use of water. Improving water management in terms of inclusivity, quality, and efficiency also ensures a fair and sustainable share of water resources.

The first CESAM priority topic focuses on the treatment of industrial water within the agrifood industries and its recycling or reuse. It also addresses the concerted use of water for sustainable management of water resources. Therefore, CESAM seeks to foster the development of solutions that address these areas.
